Deformity Correction

Assessment and correction of bone alignment and limb-length differences.

Understanding bone deformities

Bone or joint misalignment may be present from birth, develop during growth or follow an injury that healed in an altered position. It can affect walking, movement and the way loads pass through nearby joints. Treatment aims to improve alignment and function; not every deformity requires surgery.

Assessment and treatment

Examination and appropriate imaging help assess bone angles, limb length and joint function. Options depend on age, symptoms and the cause. Selected children may benefit from guided growth; other patients may need an osteotomy, in which a bone is cut and realigned. Plates, screws or an external frame may hold the correction while healing occurs. Some corrections are made gradually.

Recovery and considerations

Movement, weight-bearing and physiotherapy are planned individually, with follow-up imaging to monitor healing. Risks include infection, stiffness, delayed healing or nonunion, nerve or blood-vessel injury and incomplete or recurrent deformity. Further procedures may be needed. The extent of correction and recovery time vary; a particular outcome cannot be guaranteed.
