Joint Replacement

Knee, hip, elbow and shoulder replacement for damaged joints.

Understanding joint replacement

Joint replacement removes damaged joint surfaces and replaces them with artificial components. It may be considered for severe arthritis or certain injuries when pain and restricted movement persist despite appropriate non-surgical treatment. Knee, hip, elbow and shoulder procedures differ; examination and imaging help determine whether replacement is suitable.

Assessment and procedure

Your surgeon reviews symptoms, X-rays, medical conditions and daily activity goals. The operation is performed under an appropriate anaesthetic. The type of implant and surgical plan depend on the joint and the condition being treated. Preparation includes reviewing medicines, infection risks and fitness for surgery.

Recovery and considerations

Rehabilitation, exercises and follow-up are important for restoring movement and strength. Restrictions and recovery time vary by joint and patient. Risks include infection, blood clots, stiffness, nerve injury and implant wear or loosening; hip replacements can also dislocate. Surgery cannot guarantee a particular result, and some implants may eventually require revision.
