Slab & Cast Application

Support and immobilisation to protect injured bones and soft tissues.

Slabs and casts

A slab is a partial support that allows space for swelling, while a full cast surrounds the limb. They can be used for selected fractures, soft-tissue injuries or protection after a procedure. The type and duration depend on the injury and its stability.

Looking after the support

Keep it dry unless specifically told otherwise. Do not insert objects beneath it, trim it or remove it yourself. Elevate the limb as advised and move the exposed fingers or toes when permitted. Attend follow-up appointments even if pain improves.

When to seek help

Increasing pain, numbness, inability to move fingers or toes, unusual coldness or blue discoloration needs urgent assessment. A wet, damaged, loose or excessively tight cast should be checked. Other concerns include pressure sores, skin irritation and stiffness. Exercises after removal help restore movement and strength.
