Sports Injuries

Care for activity-related ligament, tendon, muscle and joint injuries.

Common sports injuries

Sports injuries include sprains, muscle strains, tendon problems, ligament tears, meniscus injuries and fractures. Pain, swelling or instability can limit activity. Assessment distinguishes a minor injury from one needing urgent treatment. A deformed joint, inability to bear weight after injury, marked numbness or a cold limb needs prompt medical attention.

Assessment and treatment

Your doctor reviews the injury, activity goals and joint stability. X-rays, ultrasound or MRI may be appropriate, but are not needed for every injury. Treatment may include protection, activity modification, support and progressive physiotherapy. Selected tears, displaced injuries or persistent instability may require surgery, including arthroscopic repair or reconstruction where suitable.

Returning to activity

Rehabilitation gradually restores movement, strength, balance and sport-specific control. Return to sport is based on symptoms, healing, functional testing and clinical clearance rather than elapsed time alone. Risks include repeat injury, persistent instability, stiffness and, after surgery, infection or repair failure. A phased return and continued conditioning help reduce risk but cannot eliminate it.
