Steroid Injections

Targeted anti-inflammatory treatment for selected joint and soft-tissue problems.

What an injection can do

Corticosteroid injections can reduce inflammation and pain in selected joints or surrounding tissues. They are different from anabolic steroids. They do not repair every underlying problem and are used only after assessing whether the likely benefit outweighs the risks.

Before and during treatment

Tell your doctor about diabetes, infections, allergies and all medicines, especially blood thinners. Do not stop medicines without advice. The skin is cleaned before injection; local anaesthetic or imaging guidance may be used when appropriate. Follow the specific activity advice provided afterwards.

Effects and risks

Benefit may take several days and can be temporary or absent. A short-lived pain flare can occur. Risks include infection, skin or fat changes, tendon injury and a temporary rise in blood sugar. Repeated injections need careful assessment. Increasing redness, swelling, fever or severe persistent pain after injection requires urgent medical review.
